How do I apply for Companion Protect pet insurance?

Enrolling your furry family member in Companion Protect is easy!

1. Get a quote.

Companion Protect monthly premiums are based on three simple factors: species (dog or cat), your zip code, and your pet’s age. (And don’t worry! Unlike typical pet insurance companies, our rates never increase due to your pet aging!)

2. Submit an online application.

Provide a few details, including best way to contact you, details about your pet, and your veterinarian’s information.

3. Provide recent medical records. 

Companion Protect will request your pet’s medical records from your veterinarian (with your consent, of course!) to process your enrollment and determine if pre-existing condition exclusions apply. We value complete transparency with our customers and never want you to be surprised when it’s time to use your coverage. That’s why we notify you during the enrollment process if any pre-existing conditions will be excluded from your policy. You can rest easy knowing what is covered, up front.

If your pet hasn’t been to the vet within the past 12 months, an enrollment visit may be required to kick start coverage. Don’t worry, it will be fast and easy and will set your pet up for the best health and happiness they can handle!


Once we review your pet's medical records, the process is quick! Within just a few days, we complete your enrollment and begin coverage with no waiting periods! That means you can rest easy knowing your four-legged family member is protected from unexpected accidents, injuries, illnesses and more!

Watch for your welcome kit, including the policy and your pet’s insurance card in the mail within 3 to 5 business days of enrollment!

How do I file a claim?

Filing a claim is easy. You can visit any licensed veterinarian for service and quickly and easily file a claim online via our Claims page or through our online customer portal (MyCP),or by calling us at 800-304-9930 to submit your claim over the phone.

When you visit your veterinarian, you'll pay the bill at the time of service and submit a claim for quick reimbursement, typically within 3-5 days of claim approval. The deductible is $100, with a 20% co-pay.

How do I know if my pet has a pre-existing condition?

While no pet insurance company covers pre-existing conditions, Companion Protect values complete transparency with our customers.

Once we receive your enrollment application, we review your pet’s medical history to determine whether any pre-existing condition exclusions apply. And we inform you of these exclusions up front — both at the time of enrollment, and in your welcome kit and policy — so that you always know what to expect when it’s time to use your coverage.

Are discounts available?

Companion Protect is proud to offer a variety of discounts to our customers, including:

  • Multi-pet: Enjoy discounts on your premiums when you enroll more than one furry friend!
  • Military: In appreciation for their service, active and retired military qualify for discounts on their premium.
  • Animal Welfare: Animal shelter and rescue employees, fosters, and volunteers, and veterinary hospital employees qualify for discounts as our thanks for their dedication to helping pets in need.

When will I be charged?

We want to make sure you always have the coverage you need for your pet, and that claims are never denied due to non-payment. That’s why Companion Protect charges your monthly premium automatically via debit or credit card.

You’ll be charged for your first month at the time your application is approved. We'll process your second month's charge 25 days after enrollment unless you choose a different date on the application. Following that, charges will be processed monthly.

This payment structure creates a credit on your account to allow time to update payment in the event we are unable to process payment on your bill cycle date.

Is there a bill cycle date that works best for you? You can select your bill date when you apply!

Can I change my billing date?

Yes! You can change your billing date by logging into your customer portal account (my.companionprotect.com) or by calling us at 800-304-9930 to adjust your billing cycle to the date that works best for you.

How do I update my payment method?

How do I end my Companion Protect coverage?
